Today we are creating history, a legacy of honor, remembrance, service, and touching the lives of many. The Kansas Firefighters Museum has a collective mission to honor its Kansas firefighters at the official Kansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial Plaza, preserve and share the firefighting history of our state, help children through Coats For Kids, and provide a free annual Fire Camp for teens with the help of local emergency agencies and organizations…but we won’t stop there. This year, an additional goal is to provide decontamination wipes for firefighters to have when responding to fires in an effort to help prevent dangerous cancers caused by toxins our Kansas firefighters are exposed to. Last year, we invited firefighters to make special dedications to fallen firefighters from their community in our calendar. We are the only calendar of its kind in the world that honors its fallen firefighters in this way. Little did we know that this year we would lose one of our very own, Chief Mike Corn. He was a great leader, firefighter, training officer, teacher, life saver…..but most of all, our close friend. Not ready to let him go, we wanted to learn more from him, laugh with him, and serve with him. He embraced the missions we carry out and even this calendar could not have existed without support like his. For reasons we will never understand, fate took him from us on a day that we did get blessed with serving with him as we planned for Fire Camp, cheered on Xavier (our first military firefighter) for trying out for the calendar, laughed together, shook hands and hugged not knowing that just hours later he would leave us taking his last breath as he was responding to his very last call. If we could speak to you now, Mike: We will pass on your legacy. For your legacy is in us because you taught us well, set the bar high, embraced us, picked us up when we fell and even gave us a swift kick when we needed it. We will miss you beyond words until we meet again, good friend! The Kansas Firefighters Museum invites you to take a moment to remember the fallen firefighters in our state and wishes to thank you for joining us in our mission.
