Included in the addition would be rest rooms, more display area for fire apparatus and an elevator for handicapped access to the second floor
A memorial garden south of the museum was dedicated in June, 2002. It includes a wall with the names of Kansas fallen firefighters, a courtyard of engraved bricks donated by family and friends and a life-size statue of a firefighter amid fire debris holding a comrade’s helmet.

SPECIAL THANKS TO:
Hutchinson Community College, Salvation Army, South High School and Walgreens along with our local fire departments and firefighters who all came together to make this possible!
Little did we know the impact we would make as we started to identify and connect with kids across the state through firefighters as they ran calls, or agencies like Big Brothers & Sisters across Kansas and even local teachers and churches who have helped us identify kids in need along the way. Not only do firefighters get to enjoy the gift of giving kids coats, scarves, hats and gloves, but they also brighten the day of families in ways they never imagined.
Once kids are identified, they are invited along with their parents to a special day to receive their winter wear with a personal “shopping buddy-firefighter”. We provide hot chocolate, coffee, breakfast, and families enjoy games and amazing fire trucks on display.
For those unable to bring their kids, we have firefighters who personally deliver coats. Additional families who benefit are those who are fire victims.
With the help of proceeds from calendar sales and a partnership with local fire departments we purchase coats and provide winter wear to over 500 children every year. We are expecting the need to grow this coming year with the large number of families affected by layoffs and downsizing of many businesses.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
The Kansas Firefighters Museum in partnership with 104.5 The Fox, FireHouse Subs (Wichita locations), Sedgwick County Fire Department, RiverWalk Church Of Christ, and Wichita Fire Department invite the public to donate a new winter item (hat, gloves, scarf, or coat) for a child in need. We identify children through various groups like firefighters, police officers, social workers, and various community support organizations.
What: Coats For Kids Drive
When: First weekend of November to last weekend of November
